Siting a shadow on economic recovery efforts in the United States is the cost of illegal immigration that consumes U.S. taxpayer dollars for education, healthcare, social welfare benefits, and criminal justice. Illegal aliens (or more politically correct, “undocumented immigrants”) with ties to Mexican drug cartels are contributing to death and destruction on U.S. lands along the southern border.

While the declining job market in the United States may be discouraging some would-be border crossers, a flow of illegal aliens continues unabated, with many entering the United States as drug-smuggling “mules.”

Increasingly vicious foot soldiers of the Mexican drug cartels are taking control of U.S. lands along the border, especially since U.S. Border Patrol units have been reassigned, some to offices 60 to 80 miles inland.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) early last year posted signs warning citizens to avoid Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, Ariz., because of criminal activity in the area, an area that includes protected natural areas precious to the nation.

In reaction to public outrage over the signs, the BLM removed the offensive wording in October 2010, replacing it with the following: Visitor Information Update—Active Federal Law Enforcement Patrol Area.

As the liberal news media, far-left Democrats, and labor unions push for the “Hispanicazation” of U.S. culture, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the U.S. border has never been more secure.

Perhaps she is basing this on the reduced number of apprehensions, which result, of course, from reassigning Border Patrol agents inland.

In a recent New York Times article, Nicholas Kristof criticized U.S. citizens for not speaking a foreign language and suggested that “Every child in the United States should learn Spanish.” He concluded that as the United States increasingly integrates economically with Latin America, Spanish will be crucial for the United States.

For decades, the liberal left has argued that Latin America is essential for U.S. business and trade. Kristof states that Latin America “is finally getting its act together” but fails to mention the Obama administration’s $2 billion loan of U.S. taxpayer money in 2009 to Brazil’s Petrobras oil company for deep off-shore oil drilling. Obama confidant George Soros, through the Soros Fund Management LLC, until recently owned millions of dollars of Petrobras stock.

Kristof suggests that one day Spanish-speaking Americans will be part of daily life in the United States and that workmen such as mechanics will be able to communicate easily with Spanish-speaking customers.

He fails to explain why these customers will not be speaking English. After all, the ability to speak, read, and write English remains a requirement for U.S. citizenship.

President Barack Obama gives lip service to increasing border control resources with limited funding and personnel. Many officials, including the governors of Texas and Arizona, are skeptical regarding the Obama administration’s resolve. They resent that the United States is being blamed for the killing fields on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. Border.

For instance, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in March 2009, during her first official visit to Mexico, placed the blame for the Mexican drug cartels’ vicious murders on the United States.

In Mexico City, she announced that the U.S. appetite for illegal drugs and the easy acquisition of guns from the United States by Mexicans are the root causes of the Mexican crime wave. “Blame America” has become the global agenda of the Democratic Party.

The Obama administration’s plan to resolve the immigration chaos is to offer amnesty to all comers. President Obama re-affirms his support of a “pathway to citizenship” (amnesty) for illegal aliens in 2011.

The administration, however, has announced no plans to control the influx of future waves of illegal aliens or their skyrocketing costs to the nation. The administration, which condones U.S. sanctuary cities and states, has no plans to file charges against them for violations of federal immigration law. Nor does the administration seem concerned about the environmental impact that illegal aliens have on the ecology of the United States.

Many national forests, parks, monuments, wilderness areas, and wildlife refuges — once the pride of the nation — are serving today as marijuana fields for illegal alien gangs.

not be obeyed. Concerned citizens can only trust that the new speaker of the House, John Boehner, as part of congressional oversight of federal agencies, will demand enforcement of existing immigration laws.

When will President Obama recognize that illegal immigration is slowing economic recovery? Can he resolve the chaos while still appeasing his Hispanic base?

To maintain his populist aura, the president is in the habit of saying one thing to one audience and the opposite to another. 


One Obama apologist explained, “Campaign rhetoric is one thing,” suggesting that governing is another. The deliberate Hispanicazation of the United States to secure a block of votes is quite another.


They Destroyed Our Country

They knew Obama was an unqualified crook; yet they promoted him. They knew Obama was a train wreck waiting to happen; yet they made him president, to the great injury of America and the world. They understood he was only a figurehead, an egomaniac, and a liar; yet they made him king, doing great harm to our republic (perhaps irreparable.)
We are talking about the Clintons, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Frank, Wasserman-Schultz, Biden, Leahy, Durbin, Murray, Kennedy, Hagel, Kerry, Dodd, Hoyer, Baucus, and many others.
They all knew Obama was an empty suit; yet for private gain and personal advancement, they trampled on the flag, betraying the very people they claim to serve, preferring Party to principle. During the 2008 campaign, they said he was unqualified, ill-prepared, and unsuited for the office. Yet when his crooked ways carved out primary victory, they jumped on board the Ship of Fools, stoking his engine with lies, deception, and propaganda. Hillary knew he stole victory; but like a good Party operative, she buttoned her lip and took orders, submitting to authority and covering criminality.

The Ship of Fools also carried members of the 'progressive' propaganda press, people who made it a full time job to promote the Democrat agenda and the joke called the Obama Administration: Chris Matthews, Rather, Maddow, Schultz, Olbermann, Moyers, Sullivan, Friedman, Huffington, Sharpton, and Krugman and legions of others.

They banded together with the likes of Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, George Soros, Saul Alinsky, Khalid Al-Mansour, Rashid Khalidi, and legions of other radical Islamists, communists, and assorted America-haters. Embarrassingly, many Republicans and so-called conservatives either helped the farce along or were used as pawns in the promotion of the hoax. But the greatest disgrace of all were evangelicals. Through sloth or ignorance, they either voted for the poser or stayed at home on election day.
And what progress have the "progressives" delivered?
A ruined economy.
Insurmountable debt.
Bankruptcy.
Record numbers on disability and food stamps, a dependency class mushrooming out of control.
Federal despotism.
Domestic chaos, violence, and deepening divisions.
Systemic demoralization.
Emboldened enemies.
Erosion of constitutional protections.
Looming tyranny.
Loss of global standing.

Now, with whistleblowers finally getting an ear on The Hill and in the media, we are learning the truth about Benghazi. We are seeing the end of Obama as a consequence; but, even if he exits, the disease remains.

Democrats: A plague on the nation




How as Americans do we explain the intransigence of the left when it comes to national security?  'Tis a mystery.  These people, these Democrats in Congress, are among the most privileged persons on the planet.  They have enjoyed, more than most, the blessings bequeathed by the Founders, the authors of the Constitution.  Yet they are determined, like Obama, to transform us into something this nation was never meant to be: a land without borders.  While all of them are on record supporting a border wall in the past, now that Donald Trump is president, they all oppose it with every fiber of their being.  They know that it will work, and they cannot abide Trump having a win.  These people – Schumer, Pelosi, Gutiérrez, etc. – are truly venal.  Governor Brown has effectively destroyed California, now benighted by rampant homelessness and the crime that accompanies a population of illiterate, drug-addicted, gang-affiliated, criminally inclined persons adrift on our streets.  And now another young officer has been killed by an illegal alien thanks to the left's obsession with protecting the throngs of migrants crossing the border into the U.S. 
It should be obvious to every American by now that our progressive left does not have the best interest of Americans at heart.  Quite the opposite.  They loathe those of us who put Trump in the White House and are determined to punish us.  They intend to raise our taxes to pay for the $100B illegal aliens cost us every year.  They need open borders to import future voters; millions of illegals voted in the 2018 election thanks to motor voter bills and states' refusal to require voter ID.  The Democrats know they cannot win without cheating.  They cheated in 2016 and are still stunned that their carefully calculated strategy did not work – thus, the cover-up, AKA the Mueller investigation, of their many crimes committed over the Obama years, many at the direction of Hillary Clinton with Obama's knowledge and approval.  Our once most revered institutions, the DOJ, the FBI, and the CIA, have been thoroughly corrupted.  Mueller, a willing participant in that corruption, is up to his eyeballs in the cover-up.
Will any of these people at the DOJ, the FBI, and the CIA, ever be held accountable?  To date, they have not been.  The power they have within the Deep State is beyond formidable; it is seemingly absolute.
It appears that America has become a sort of medieval oligarchy.  Trump, as the outsider he is, is a grave threat to all of those who believed they were in control in perpetuity.  They are ready and willing to do anything, no matter how illegal or immoral, to depose him, to expel him from office.
The Democrats in office today, and those about to take the majority in the House, are anti-Americans.  Of that you can be sure.  They care about keeping our borders open to all comers more than they care about keeping Americans safe.  They all supported a border wall when Clinton and Obama were in office.  Now they hate the president more than they love the country.  Of this there can be no doubt. 
The Democrats hate Trump so much that they want the economy to crash.  They are hoping for recession.  Is the Fed on board with the left?  It seems so since, that institution's raising the interest rate yet again is counterproductive to our thriving economy.  It is the Fed that whipsaws Wall Street, is it not?
It appears that the entirety of the left – the media, the Deep State, Wall Street, and the Democratic Party – is working in concert to bring Trump down, no matter the consequences to the country.  Meanwhile, the Republicans in the Congress, most but certainly not all, are as bendy as can be.  With notable exceptions – Jim Jordan, Mark Meadows, Tom Cotton, Matt Gaetz, Louie Gohmert – they hate Trump, too.  He has ruffled their feathers, their comfortable position as go-alongs-to-get-alongs in D.C.  They have no real principles, no gumption, no fuel for a fight.  They are cowards all, pajama boys.  Paul Ryan is their poster boy.
The young policeman who died in California Christmas night will and should be a wake-up call for the Democrats.  They are 100% responsible for the presence of such criminals, protected by ridiculous sanctuary policies in our cities.  The media and the Democrats are in an uproar over the two migrant children who died at the hands of irresponsible parents who used them as a ticket to ride, yet they have nothing to say about the murder of the young policeman in Newman, Calif.  He is, to them, a casualty of politics, of their grand design to obliterate conservatives from the public realm forever.  They do not care about him, his widow, or his infant son.  They were happy to contribute to the odious Christine Blasey Ford's GoFundMe page, but not one of them will contribute to a GoFundMe page for Ronil Singh's family.  He is law enforcement, so they feel nothing. 
The Democratic Party of today is an abomination.  The assault on our constitutional republic began with Woodrow Wilson, and their long-range plan to overhaul what the Founders built is still operational.  The left has nothing but contempt for ordinary Americans, especially those who voted for Trump.
Leftists are dangerous when challenged, like a pack of jackals dismembering its prey.  They need to be defeated, indicted, arrested, tried, convicted, and imprisoned.  They are a scourge on the nation as founded.  They do not love this country; they seek to destroy all that was and is good within it.

The Schumer & Pelosi show


Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, the twin nutters of Congress, were certain they could beat Trump at his own game, but have made fools of themselves, as usual.  The stand-off is not over but with each passing day, the Democrats reveal more of their anti-American, pro-illegal immigration agenda.  Conservatives have been sounding the alarm for years: Democrats do not care about American citizens!  
We are an annoying inconvenience, especially those of us who do not buy what they are selling.  We vote against them, which makes them angry.  They lash out at us, call us names, impugn our intelligence with fervor.  All of the late-night comics, the Bill Mahers of the comedy branch of the entertainment industry, are especially venal.  Jimmy Kimmel has decried those who have contributed to the GoFundMe page to fund the border wall as meth addicts.  It was begun by a Vet, Brad Kolfage, who lost three limbs and it's raised nearly $15m.  
It appears that Democratic members of Congress are as snowflakey as millennials on our university campuses. They assume that anyone who opposes their ridiculous socialist, genderless, climate-alarmist, virtue-signaling directives is a Neanderthal, unfit to have an opinion.  It is then thoroughly acceptable to malign such people, those of us who oppose every aspect of their anti-America-as-founded agenda, in any and every  disgusting manner they can devise. 
The left is all about identity politics.  They assign all of us to a group -- racial, class, and/or all of their fabricated gender categories.  The right is all about individuals, their character, their talent, their contributions to society.  We do not care about skin color, economic class or sexual orientation.  We do care about good vs. evil, right vs. wrong.  This makes us quite villainous in the eyes of the left for whom everything is relative. For example, we do not think poverty causes crime, unlearned values of Western Civilization do.  Try to steal an election? It is moral if it takes out an opponent.  We are, it appears, the left vs. the right, very different on a neurological level. 
Schumer and Pelosi have armed guards whenever they are amongst the public.  But they are both fervent in their quest to deny us the right to bear arms and to prevent a wall on the southern border to protect us from the flood of lethal drugs that flow into the US.  They are impervious to the crimes of the barbaric gangs like MS13, no matter how many innocent Americans they kill.  They do not give a thought to the many illegals from terrorist nations that also seek to enter the country on a daily basis.  Schumer, Pelosi and their willing subjects in Congress ignore completely the horrific hazards that cross the border every day.  They want cheap labor, no matter how many Americans are left jobless, and they want, more than anything, a dependent underclass whom they mean to give the right to vote.  They already vote anyway, thanks to the Left's rejection of Common-sense voter ID.
If there were a television program based on Schumer and Pelosi, it would have to be a comedy; the two of them are so inept, so childish. They would be  Dumb and Dumber redux.  Each of them seems to believe they run the country and can dictate to the president how he will govern. They demand that Trump abandon the wall.  They have no intention of compromising; they only want to deny Trump and his supporters what they want -- border security that works.  So enraged, so benighted, by Trump's presidency, they would rather see us overrun by migrants from third-world nations, like those who have destroyed the UK, Germany, Sweden, and the rest of Europe, than protect America as a sovereign nation.
The "government shutdown" is just a ploy, many times overused by now, relatively meaningless to the lives of most Americans. The Schumer & Pelosi show will do everything they can to hype it as a disaster, but we all know it is nothing of the kind.  Trump must hold out for funding of the wall.  
While there have been some bad actors in our government in the past, Schumer and Pelosi are the worst of the worst.  They are equally arrogant, each thoroughly ignorant of reality beyond the bubble of wealth and privilege they inhabit.  They both believe themselves to be smarter than the rest of us, when in fact they are both really dim bulbs, long past their sell-by date.  Yes, Pelosi is good at raising money; how and why is a mystery.  That each of them is repeatedly re-elected does not say much for their constituents' familiarity with the Constitution, the law, American history or the facts in their own communities.  
San Francisco, Pelosi's district is now a hell-hole but for her walled compound.  New York too, like California, is a state that residents are fleeing as fast as they can.  Both states have been destroyed by moonbatty leftists; high taxes, dumbing down of education for political purposes, and the sacrifice of common sense to global warming alarmists.  Schumer and

The Alinsky-ization of Brett Kavanaugh



Republicans and conservatives are fond of referencing Chicago community organizer Saul Alinsky, but how many have read his body of work?  I've always referred to Alinsky's secular agitator bible, Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals, as the sequel to The Communist Manifesto.  Published in 1972, shortly before Alinsky's death, Rules was a significant part of President Obama's and Hillary Clinton's political upbringings – although he more influenced Obama, who followed in Alinsky's community organizing footsteps in Chicago in the '80s. 
Alinsky's thirteen rules are effective.  The first step to challenging them is actually recognizing them.
Here's how Democrats and the DMIC (Democrat Media Industrial Complex) Alinsky-ized Brett Kavanaugh, in the lead up to, during, and after his U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings.
1: "Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have."
Outnumbered 51-49, Senate Democrats know that the arithmetic isn't on their side.  If the Democrats and Republicans each hold court along party lines, Kavanaugh is our next justice, thanks to the nuclear option employed by Kentucky senator Mitch McConnell last year to get Justice Neil Gorsuch confirmed. 
But a two-senator lead means the tie-breaking voter, Vice President Mike Pence, had better be on call when the roll call vote to confirm Kavanaugh is held.  Democrats undoubtedly consider Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, of Maine and Alaska, respectively, to be free agents, particularly over Roe v. Wade.  Kavanaugh was relentlessly questioned by Democrats over abortion; the goal was to create doubt that Collins and Murkowski would vote to confirm him.  If uncertainty exists, it's unlikely that Democrats from states President Trump won in 2016 will cross the aisle.  If Democrats somehow secure 51 nays, we'll have the modern-day version of Borked: Kavanaughed.  
2. "Never go outside the expertise of your people."
Alinsky wrote in Rules that "the issue is never the issue."  The reason the Democrats were obsessed with the documents withheld by the president has nothing to do with the documents; it has to do with the fact that the Democrats on the Committee on the Judiciary were unwilling to have substantive legal discussions.  Why?  Simple: because Kavanaugh would have made the Democrats – several of whom are trained attorneys – look like first-day law school students.  Having authored 307 opinions, from 2,700 cases, during his 12 years as a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, along with dozens of speeches to law schools and legal groups, Kavanaugh's jurisprudence bona fides are not only rock solid, but also very public.  There is zero we don't know about Kavanaugh's interpretive approach and acumen.
3. "Whenever possible go outside the expertise of the enemy."
I suspect that this rule guided The New York Times' and Associated Press's show-me-the-woman-and-I'll-show-you-the-crime expedition two months ago for the work emails of Kavanaugh's wife, Ashley, who was hired earlier this year as town manager of Chevy Chase, Md.  The Times requested any emails that contained the words "gun," "abortion," "federalist" or "gay."  Perhaps the Times believed that Mrs. Kavanaugh was fond of attending The Federalist Society lectures about concealed carrying lesbians who believe that abortion is creepy.  The Times' request was a big dud; 85 pages of emails later, and, I'm sure, much to the newspaper's chagrin, nothing incriminating, and nothing about guns, abortion, gays, or federalists was discovered.  The AP requested all of her work emails but hasn't yet reported on its findings.
4. "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."
Though there weren't explicit questions about Kavanaugh's Catholic faith, he noted his work with Catholic Charities.  This rule was the basis for California senator Cuckoo Kamala Harris's lie that Kavanaugh called birth control abortion-inducing drugs (have you noticed how often I've already written about abortion?).  And here's the ACLU's predictable fear-mongering that Kavanaugh would usher in a theocratic oligarchy.  In fairness, I'm not angry at the ACLU, because voting is a lot like any decision or purchase: it's done based on fear or greed.
5. "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."
Kavanaugh has been in Washington for decades; he's what many of us would call an "establishment" figure.  This has provided an opportunity for the DMIC toattack his establishment "elitism," which President Trump swore to reject by draining the swamp.  The median household income of Kavanugh's ZIP code is $12,000 a month, his house cost $1.2 million to purchase, and Kavanaugh racked up tens of thousands of dollars in credit debt to buy Washington Nationals season tickets.  As coach of one of his daughters' basketball teams, his moniker is "Coach K."  If the nickname Coach K doesn't smack of elitism, I don't know what does.  The DMIC showed no qualms in portraying Kavanaugh as an out-of-touch Beltway insider.  Oh, yeah, and people will die if he's confirmed.
6. "A good tactic is one your people enjoy."
Democrats know that most of their voters are out for blood, and a "good tactic" was to inextricably link Kavanaugh to President Trump, an "unindicted co-conspirator," according to Harris and Connecticut senator Richard Blumenthal, due to the plea deal of Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.
In the old days, Democrats weren't quite as politically loony as they currently are and were definitely more likable.  Unlikability is a good tactic for the Democrats; the temperament of a justice is important, and the more unlikeable Democrats were in their questioning, the better the chances Kavanaugh would lose his cool.  But alas, he kept his cool, especially during Harris's entrapping questionsabout possible conversations he had with Trump's lawyer's firm regarding the Mueller investigation.  The Democrats tried to force Kavanaugh into the role of de facto spokesman for the president, but he was ready for them. 
7. "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag."
I didn't watch every second of the hearings, but I watched more than 75 percent, and Democrats said Trump's name dozens of times.  New Jersey senator Cory Booker handled Trump fatigue by putting on a theatrical production worthy of Broadway: Booker, whose claim to fame was interrogating Mike Pompeo about sodomy during his secretary of state confirmation hearings, dared his Republican colleagues to expel him from the Senate.  As was expected, President George W. Bush's name popped up.  Kavanaugh worked for Bush, and the implication is that Kavanaugh has always been associated with illegitimate presidents.
8. "Keep the pressure on."
This is one of the easier rules to follow, because specifics aren't necessary.  Attorneys who litigate before the Supreme Court know to expect random barrages of questions, and the Democrats kept up the pressure by interrupting Kavanaugh dozens of times, not including the interruptions from protesters.  The interruptions failed in knocking Kavanaugh off his game – same for the objections to the hearings, coordinated by Democrats.  
9. "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."
If I had to pick one rule sold the hardest by Democrats, it's this one.  The "threats" posed by Kavanaugh sound a lot like the threats posed by Robert Bork, nominated by President Reagan in 1982.  Said Massachusetts senator Edward Kennedy: 
Bork's America is a land in which women would be forced into back-alley abortions, blacks would sit at segregated lunch counters, rogue police could break down citizens' doors in midnight raids, schoolchildren could not be taught about evolution[.]
Of course, had Bork been confirmed, none of those things would have occurred.  But that wasn't important; it was the "what if?" threat of those things.  In Kavanaugh's case, workers will have zero rights, felons will own machine guns, and women will be forced into back-alley abortions and die.
10. "The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition."
If Kavanaugh is confirmed, the Democrats will have lost the battle, but they will consider the larger war still winnable – especially considering that he's expected to be confirmed a month before the midterm elections.  It was quite apparent which Democrats were thinking about running for president in 2020 (Harris and Booker) and which weren't (Partrick Leahy of Vermont).  Those positioning themselves for a White House run will incorporate their self-aggrandizing "resistance" to Kavanaugh into their campaigns.
11. "If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside."
In the case of Kavanaugh, this is a slight overlap of Rule 1.  Trump has gotten 60 federal judges confirmed, is reforming the Supreme Court to how the Founders envisioned it, and has 100 pending federal judicial appointments.  These realities are red-meat selling points to Democrat voters: "Look at the havoc Trump has wrought!  We must prevent him from further destruction!"  Just how deep it will break into the counterside remains to be seen, but desperation is all Democrats have left (although projected demographics, if not engaged, don't bode well for America First).
12. "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative."
To have a chance of winning long-term political battles, there must be self-immolation and sacrificial lambs within the Democratic Party ranks.  Adaptation is key.  This is already underway, as evidenced by the rise of "democratic socialist" primary winners nationwide.  In America, Leninism has always been implemented in creeping doses, until one day, it's mainstream.  The constructive alternative will continue to be the message that overt, out-in-the-open socialism is necessary to prevent future Brett Kavanaughs.
13. "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."
In Clintonian fashion, the Democrats will persist.  Remember: Kavanaugh can't prove he's not racist, or that he won't vote to send abortion battles back to the states, where they belonged in the first place.  The Democrats will continue to color Kavanaugh identically to how we describe Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor: as an untrustworthy judge who legislates from the bench.
My prediction: Kavanaugh will receive 54 votes to confirm, with Collins and Murkowski unlikely to defect.

Federal agents discovered an underground tunnel crossing the border into Mexico from Naco, Arizona on Tuesday as part of an investigation after a traffic stop that yielded over two tons of marijuana, with a value of approximately $3 million.

More than half a million illegal immigrants of several dozen nationalities have been apprehended on John Ladd’s sprawling cattle ranch in southeastern Arizona. YUMA, Arizona—Right along the southwest border, sheriff’s departments are left picking up the pieces in the wake of cross-border crime. It then spreads beyond the border.
Consequently, sheriffs need a bigger seat at the table during border security discussions, said ex-Marine and Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot.
“We all too often see interviews in Washington [with] mayors and governors but, no offence, they are not the ones that are down here on the border,” Wilmot said in an interview at his office on May 25.
“They are not the ones that are investigating the crimes. They are not the ones out here when it’s 120 degrees, processing a crime scene where 14 people were left to die in the desert.”
Wilmot has witnessed it all in his 30-plus years with the sheriff’s department. He knows a vulture will peck a human body down to nothing but bone, because he has seen it. He knows bandits follow the smugglers over the border and rape the women before running back to Mexico, because he is left with the victims. He knows the cartels will commit any crime to get drugs and humans across the border.
Yuma County is 5,522 square miles—larger than the state of Connecticut—and it shares 126 miles of border with Mexico. California and its Imperial Sand Dunes are just a mirage away on the western border beyond the Colorado River.
The Yuma Border Patrol Sector used to be the worst in the country for illegal crossings, until it became a poster-child for the effectiveness of a border fence.
In 2005, before the fence, more than 2,700 vehicles crossed the Colorado River and open deserts, loaded with illegal immigrants and drugs, according to Border Patrol numbers.
Apprehensions steadily increased to more than 138,000 in fiscal 2005.
“Yuma battled entrenched smuggling groups for control of the border,” said Border Patrol in a video. “Mass incursions often left agents outnumbered 50 to 1. Agents were assaulted with rocks and weapons daily.”

Following the Secure Fence Act of 2006, Yuma tripled manpower and added mobile surveillance, as well as fencing and vehicle barriers.
Yuma went from having 5.2 miles of fencing to 63 miles, and subsequently saw an almost 95 percent decrease in border apprehensions by 2009, when Border Patrol made about 7,000 arrests.

Ancillary Crime Down 91 Percent

It also directly affected what the sheriff’s department had to deal with.
“We were able to reduce [ancillary crimes] by 91 percent,” Wilmot said. “The deaths in the desert, the rapes, the robberies, the homicides, the burglaries, the thefts.”
But the fence was only one part of the equation, said Capt. Eben Bratcher. The other part, under Operation Streamline, was 100 percent prosecution of illegal border crossers.
“If you did try to cross and you got caught, you were held accountable. There were consequences,” Bratcher said. “So the combination, the fence slowed them down, but they are going to find a way over it, under it, through it, whatever. But the real issue was, when you got caught, you went to jail. It stopped.”

Bratcher said that before the fence and Operation Streamline, the area was out of control.
“My patrol guys would be out there, and we’re trying to do our primary job, which is community safety and investigating crimes, and we would encounter people who were being smuggled or sneaking across, every night,” he said.
“If you tried to pull over a van that had the windows spray-painted black, you were absolutely ensured that there was going to be a vehicle pursuit coming because they would just take off, and over and over and over again we experienced that. Several horrible crashes, multiple people dying—and not just the people that were smuggling and being smuggled—but innocent people who were trying to live here were impacted hugely by that kind of activity.
Operation Streamline shut all that off for us.”
However, during the Obama administration, Operation Streamline was curtailed and the 100 percent prosecution policy was halted.
“When they did away with that, they [started] coming again, and the numbers that are coming through Yuma are way back up—not where they were, but it is disturbing to see the trend increasing again and the tactics changed again, too,” Bratcher said. “When you take away the prosecution, rather than trying to sneak through, now they just walk across and give themselves up.”

Political Agenda

Border Patrol in Yuma apprehended more than 26,000 illegal aliens in fiscal 2018.
Although the numbers pale in comparison to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas (more than 162,000 apprehensions for the same period), it is still “maddening” to Bratcher that his community suffered due to Obama-era policies.
“When they put their own political agenda above the quality of life of American citizens and Yuma citizens, what is their motivation? It makes you question that,” he said.
During the Obama era, Wilmot was forced to take matters into his own hands.
“It got to the point where, because the feds would not prosecute those drug smugglers backpacking marijuana across, I had to deputize federal officers so they could actually take those cases to our County attorney and charge them with a state crime—and it was a 100 percent prosecutable case,” Wilmot said.
Wilmot said the U.S. attorney would refuse those cases, so prior to being deputized by the sheriff, the federal officers had no choice but to release the smugglers.
“That’s when we saw an uptick in drug smuggling, especially marijuana,” he said. “The individuals would come across, the U.S. attorney’s office would not charge them, the dope was seized, they would cut them loose, and it was a revolving door. They just kept coming back, coming back, coming back.”

But prosecuting on a state or county level, instead of federal, came with a hefty price tag.
“It ended up costing sheriffs in Arizona about $30 million to house these individuals that had committed crimes [and] were here illegally in this country, smuggling in heroin, dope, marijuana, cocaine,” Wilmot said.
“When I’ve got 115 [drug] backpackers in here—it’s $130 a day for us for housing an inmate—well, they’re in here for 118 [days] to a little bit longer, on average. And then the medical cost, we have to [bear] that, too.”
The State Criminal Alien Apprehension Program was designed to reimburse jails with federal dollars for housing illegal aliens, but Wilmot said he was only getting back about 5 cents to the dollar.
“So local tax payers still had to pick up the rest of that burden.”
Wilmot said he has deputized Border Patrol agents, DEA agents, FBI agents, and Homeland Security Investigations agents.
He said he hasn’t needed to take such extraordinary measures since President Donald Trump took office, as the feds have stepped up again to prosecute criminal aliens and illegal border crossers.
“It was frustrating for us, and it was also frustrating for our federal partners that swore the same [oath] that we did to protect and serve and enforce the laws of our country,” Wilmot said. “And to see them hamstrung by politics … and that’s why I said, you can’t mix politics with public safety at all, period. It just shouldn’t happen. Unfortunately, it still does and we see it today.”
In April, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a return to 100 percent prosecution of all adult illegal border crossers. After an outcry over adults and children being separated as a consequence of prosecution, Trump issued an executive order on June 20 to halt the separations but continue prosecuting as practicable.
In response, Customs and Border Protection ordered the temporary suspension of referrals for prosecutions for illegal entry for adults who are traveling with children, while the agency worked out a process with the Justice Department to maintain family unity while enforcing prosecution efforts.
“The executive order continues the zero tolerance policy, which means there are no categories of people exempt from our laws, though family unity must be maintained, and child safety and welfare is paramount,” said a Customs and Border Protection statement on Sept. 11.

Arid Land

Wilmot drove us 100 miles south from Yuma along the Colorado River, which separates Arizona and California, then southeast, straight along the fenceline that separates Arizona and Mexico. Right across the fence on the Mexican side is Highway 2, which provides easy access to the border.
The terrain is bumpy, sandy desert with rocky outcrops and hills interrupting the horizon. No trees live here, only saguaro cacti, which look imposing but provide no shade. Summer temperatures are searing. It gets up to 125 degrees during the day, with ground temperatures of up to 140 degrees. There is no water.
We end up in the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force range, where it’s a 20-mile trek as the crow flies to the nearest inhabitation.
The Sinaloa cartel works the border along here—it is dominant in California and Arizona. Cartels control all the trafficking routes throughout Mexico and the ports of entry, or plazas, into the United States.
“When you’re dealing with drug smugglers and human smugglers, there is always a cost associated,” Wilmot said. “You gotta pay the cartel to utilize their area.”

He said his department has encountered many creative ways the cartels try to get illicit goods across the border, from  ramps over the fences and tunnels under them, to ultralight aircraft, and more recently, GPS drones.
“They have used T-shirt cannons to shoot their product across into the farm fields so somebody can go pick ’em up. They will use cranes [to] lift a vehicle over the fence and drop it off,” Wilmot said.
“I mean, whatever the cartels can use, or their criminal element can use, to exploit our weaknesses that’s what they’re gonna use to get their product across.”
The fence abruptly stops at the foot of the rocky ranges, where it’s too steep for a fence but it’s easy to walk between the two countries.
Wilmot said the cartels employ people to sit up in the hills and act as lookouts.
“They keep ledgers and they’ve got radio systems, they’ve got solar panels, batteries, and they communicate back and forth with their partners in crime on the other side of the border. They watch Border Patrol and they watch us … and when the coast is clear, they let them come through,” Wilmot said.
“That’s how they get paid. For every successful load that gets through, that’s what they get paid for.
“So you’re always trying to stay a step ahead of them, and it never ceases.”

14 Bodies

Wilmot was a deputy in 2001 when 14 Mexican males died after smugglers led them across the border and told them to walk to the nearest highway.
“Unfortunately, these folks were led to believe that their foot trek across that desert was only going to be short; that they didn’t need to bring much water or food,” Wilmot said. But he estimates they were close to 50 miles from the interstate, and they were out there for days.
“We ended up getting a call, because one individual made it up to the interstate and called it in,” he said.
Border Patrol and local law enforcement found 14 bodies over a mile and a half radius, he said.
“We had one kid who died digging in a wash with his bare hands trying to get to water, and that’s how he died,” Wilmot said.
“We in law enforcement from the local communities, we have to investigate those cases. It’s not something that’s done by Border Patrol, it’s not done by … any other agency.”

Abandoned

Several years ago, deputies were searching for an illegal alien who had been abandoned by smugglers because he was sick, Wilmot said.
The area was too remote for vehicles so the Border Patrol helicopter started sweeping the area. When agents saw a flock of vultures fly out of a tree, they went and picked up the deputies to drop them near the location.
“We hiked down there, and the guy had—typically, if you get dehydrated, you start getting rid of your clothes and stuff—so the only thing he was wearing was his pants. Everything else, he’d taken off,” Wilmot said.
“Well, the vultures had sat there and cleaned him from the waist up. I mean, it was just bones, and then the rest of the clothing that covered was still there. Weird, the stuff that we see.”

Bandits

The Colorado River runs down the western boundary of Yuma and first separates Arizona and California, then forms the international border between Arizona and Mexico for around 20 miles.
The river is the site of many illegal crossings into the United States. In May, National Guardsmen were deployed to clear the thick scrub from the U.S. side of the river banks to help give Border Patrol better visibility. It also served another purpose.

Several years ago, the cartels and smugglers were using the scrub as cover.
“They would build tunnels in this stuff to hide themselves from Border Patrol,” Wilmot said. “[The] smugglers would bring [illegal aliens] across, then the bandits would follow and rape and rob them and then run back into Mexico.”
He said Border Patrol would catch a group of 12 to 15 aliens and then call the sheriff’s department to deal with the rape, robbery, and homicide cases, “because it’s not something that the federals do. So that’s an impact on our resources.”

‘Get the Politics Out of It’

Wilmot says law enforcement and public safety should be looked at completely separately from politics and immigration policy issues.
“It’s two separate deals,” he said. “Politics and public safety are not synonymous at all. We need to enforce the laws of this land. If they don’t like it—which you hear all the time—they’re the lawmakers, change it. But until then, let’s do our job.”
Wilmot said most politicians that visit the border, “they’ll do their photo op, they’ll get a 20 minute briefing, and then boom, they’re done, they’re out. And that’s the problem.”
He said border security needs to be tailored to each geographic area, “because what I might need in Yuma County is not necessarily going to be needed a couple of hundred miles away over in Pina or Cochise or Santa Cruz.”
He has a suggestion for politicians in regard to border security: “Don’t do what the governors say, don’t do what the mayors say. Get with the local law enforcement leaders and then tailor it to the needs for that area. It’s the boots on the ground that know best.”
Yuma deputies work closely with local Border Patrol agents as part of a Homeland Security program called Operation Stonegarden, which provides federal funds to enhance cooperation between federal immigration authorities and local law enforcement along the border.
“Every day, our guys are at Border Patrol briefings as they pull out into the field, so they know what to expect, where they’re needed, et cetera,” said Bratcher. “We still have the primary focus of doing our job enforcing state law, but we’re extra eyes out there in areas that they need us, and we’re in direct communication.”

Today’s Challenges

In 2005 and 2006, before the border fence, most of the crime in the community was committed by illegal aliens, drug traffickers, and human smugglers, said Bratcher. Now, the majority of crime the sheriff’s department deals with is caused by local drug addicts trying to support their habits.
“The methamphetamine addicts and those types probably commit 80 to 90 percent of the property crimes, the burglaries, the thefts, that kind of stuff,” Bratcher said. “So there is a tie when you consider that it’s the drug problem causing the crime problem—where are the drugs coming from? Mexico.”
Wilmot said he has noticed a transition away from marijuana being trafficked into the United States since some states legalized it. Mexico is instead increasing its poppy cultivation to make heroin.
“Unfortunately, we’re starting to see an uptick in the meth and the cocaine and the heroin that has been coming across the border. We’re seeing the OxyContin right now. Fentanyl is a big one,” he said.
“Now, one of the battles that we are seeing, is the cartels are trying to get juveniles to smuggle that stuff across the border.”
Right along the border, thousands of American citizen children live in Mexico, but cross the border to attend school everyday.
“They’re trying to exploit these kids, thinking they won’t get charged,” Wilmot said.
The sheriff’s department has partnered with Border Patrol to conduct an education program in local schools to deter children from becoming drug traffickers.
The law enforcement challenges caused by cross-border crime are relentless and ever-changing in Yuma County, but the sheriff is clear on the formula for border security:. “You have to have a tactical infrastructure, you have to have the boots on the ground, you have to have the electronic surveillance, and you have to have the prosecution side,” he said.
“What’s happening on the border ain’t coming across and staying here—it’s going throughout the United States.”
